Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Haruna Mohammed, who confirmed the incident, said the police had arrested Apusiobi, pending further investigation.
According to him, the children’s bodies, aged seven and five, had been deposited for autopsy at Iyienu Mortuary Hospital, Ogidi, while his father is receiving treatment at a private hospital.
Haruna said: “On June 21, 2020, at approximately 1 a.m., police officers attached to Ogbunike Police Station arrested one of Azu Ogbunike’s Ifeanyi Apusiobi, 34 years old, in Anambra State’s Oyi LGA.
“The perpetrator allegedly went berserk in an unknown situation and assaulted two of his biological children, Chinacherem Apusiobi, 7 years old, and Obinna Apusiobi, 5 years old, with a wooden pestle on their heads as they slept.
“He used the same object equally and wounded his father, Dominic Apusiobi, on the head, aged 72 years.
“Police detectives visited the scene and rushed the victims to the hospital for medical attention where a medical doctor certified the two children dead while his elderly father is responding to the treatment”
The PPRO said police had recovered the pestle as an exhibit, adding that the case had been transferred for discreet investigation to the State Criminal Investigation Department, CID, Awka.
